Histopathology/Cytology
Histopathology is the study of tissues (histology) and cells (cytology) and usually includes morbid anatomy (autopsies). Many refer to this specialty as Cellular Pathology. A practicing histopathologist expert witness generally does not work in a laboratory in isolation but closely with other doctors in a hospital. For cancers they are part of the team that meet and discuss every patient.
A histopathology/cytology expert witness is a medical doctor who is able to diagnose and study disease using expert medical interpretation of cells and tissue samples. The specialty determines the cause of death by sometimes performing autopsies, and is integral to cancer management through staging and grading of tumours.
An expert witness in histopathology will examine both biopsies and also larger pieces of tissue to aid in the diagnosis of patients.
For a cytology expert witness most people first think about the cervical screening programme, but cytology is also used to look at fluids that have collected in the body during illnesses. Fine needles are often used to aspirate cells from suspicious lumps.
